Marching Bio

This will be my third summer with Spirit of Atlanta! I started out marching in '10 after my senior year of High School, and plan to continue till my age out in 2014.

Personal Bio

My name is Darryl turner, but everyone calls me DJ. This summer will be my third year with Spirit of Atlanta. Drum corps has completely changed my life, for the better. In 2010, my rookie year I lost 35 lbs and had a new outlook on fitness, and I served as Contra Section leader in 2011. However, during 2011 I had problems breathing all summer, including a cough, and sometimes coughing up blood. 2 weeks after finals I was diagnosed with cancer (hodgkins lymphoma), when they found a mass on my Chest X-ray. I had a tumor growing on my windpipe since before the season started, yet I managed to do the whole summer with cancer. Since my parents are taking care of my medical bills I am on my own when it comes to paying for DCI. I am currently less than a month of way from being completely cancer free, and ready to continue marching until my age out. Every penny really helps me do the one thing I'm truly passionate about.
